You cannot fail to be wowed by the sheer beauty of Lake Bled. Akin to something out of a fairytale, it’s the iconic view which encompasses the spirit of Slovenia. History blends effortlessly with nature in this awe-inspiring place, and no picture can do it justice – you simply have to see it for yourself.
The best view in the area can be found at the Osojnica viewpoint, atop the hill of the same name. Take the ‘Kidriceva cesta’ road to the Lake Bled Walk trailhead to begin the rather strenuous climb to the most absorbing viewpoint you’re likely to see. The track is littered with attractive ranch houses, and as you ascend higher, views of the Bohinj Valley unfold below. The climb is not for the faint-hearted, but then again, neither are the views at the summit.
The entire panorama of the glacial fed lake is your reward for making the journey, with both Bled Island and Bled Castle within frame, as well as the Karavanke Ridge in the background on a clear day. The view is striking, and conjures up images of princesses with flowing hair, princes rushing to their rescue and perhaps the occasional dragon breathing fire through the Slovenian sky. It really is that magical.
It’s a place of love and loss. Legend has it that a young widow who lived on Bled Island had a bell cast in memory of her husband. A terrible storm struck during the transportation of the bell to from the shore to the island, sinking the boat and its crew. To this day, the bell is said to ring from the depths of the lake, sounding the loss of the widow and the love she felt for her husband.
Take a seat on a wooden bench to listen for the bell, watch the sun glint off the impossibly blue lake and be transported back in time to when life was simple and romantic. And if you’re looking for a place to surprise a special someone with a special question, this may well be the place.
