  • Perched high above the village of Hohenschwangau in southwest Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle is a piece of architecture that exudes theatrical grandeur, fairy-tale romanticism and a melding of the real and the mythological that few other structures in the world can match. Commissioned in 1868 by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, the castle was built atop a cliff ridge and was unfinished at the time of the death of the so called ‘Swan King’ in 1886.

Serving as the inspiration for the castle featured in Sleeping Beauty, you may also recognise the palace from the 1968 children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
